MANIA
Militarism-
The glorification of the military this helped feed the arms race. The militarist tradition painted war in romantic colors and in a way, sugar coated what was actually going on. The young men that were sent off to war dreamed of becoming heros and playing their trumpets rather than all of the conflict that they would soon have to face.

Alliances-
The two main alliances The Triple Alliance and The Triple Entente were intended to promote peace by creating powerful combinations that no other country would dare to attack. In the end, these two groups had the opposite effect. Two huge alliances emerged.

The Triple Alliance which would be known in the future as Central powers consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, and the Ottoman Empire which was eventually brought in by Germany.

The Triple Entene which would be known in the future at the Allies consisted of France, Russia, Britain, and Japan which was later brought in by Britain.

Serbia was a member of which alliance?

Nationalism-
Nationalism-is a strong feeling of pride and devotion to ones country and nationality.

Germany held a strong pride for their military power while, France was bitter about their defeat from the Franco-Prussian war because they lost Alsacve and Lorraine to Germany. (Pan-Slavism was a form of Nationalism)
Imperialism-
Imperialism- is the domination by one country of the political, economic or cultural life of another country or region. (How did this contribute to the onset of WWI?)

Assassination-
The Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was going to visit Bosnia which was under the control of Austria-Hungary. Bosnia was populated by many Serbs and Slavs and the news of his visit angered many Serbian nationalists. The Archduke received many warnings about visting Sarajevo but ignored them. As the Archduke and his wife were driving in a car in a parade, a man seized his chance and fired twice onto the car killing both the Archduke and his wife. This assassination was what set World War I into motion, Austria- Hungary eventually declared war on Serbia.

Explain how economic warfare was used against Germany and how it responded as a result of this strategy.

Britain formed a blockade at the beginning of the war in the North Sea to stop all ships that carried supplies in and out of Germany. Britain was allowed to confiscate all military supplies and materials that were used to create the military items. Items such as food and clothing were supposed to be passed through under International Law. Britain overruled International Law and blocked all military supplies, food, and clothing from reaching the German and Austrian people.

Germany used U-boats to retaliate and form their own blockade. Germany declared that they would sink all British ships carrying goods to Britain. Germany eventually torpedoed the British liner, similar to a cruise ship named the Lusitania. Almost 1,200 passengers lost their lives including 128 Americans. Germany justified their attack by saying the ship contained weapons. American President Wilson threatened to cut off relations with Germany, therefore Germany agreed to restrict is submarine campaign
